Ligue 1 Roundup: PSG Reclaim Top Spot As Lens Stumble
The latest Ligue 1 matchday reshaped the title race, provided dramatic late goals, and saw newcomers and mid-table sides make their mark.
Paris Saint-Germain returned to the summit of French football thanks to a combination of their own dominance and Lens’ late collapse.
Here is a detailed breakdown of the action.
PSG Capitalize on Lens’ Slip
Paris Saint-Germain returned to the top of the Ligue 1 table with a 3–0 win over Metz at the Parc des Princes, while Monaco stunned previous leader Lens with a 3–2 comeback away. PSG now leads Lens by two points with 11 games remaining.
Désiré Doue struck early for PSG, finding the net within two minutes after a long ball from Warren Zaïre-Emery exploited Metz’s high defensive line.
Goncalo Ramos played across for Bradley Barcola to head in the second before halftime, and Ramos himself added the third in the 77th minute.
PSG appeared cautious after that, conserving energy ahead of Wednesday’s second leg of their Champions League playoff against Monaco.
Lens, meanwhile, squandered a two-goal lead against Monaco. Odsonne Édouard volleyed them ahead early, and Florian Thauvin converted a rebound after goalkeeper Philipp Köhn failed to keep out a deflected effort.
However, Folarin Balogun, Denis Zakaria, and Ansu Fati turned the game on its head late to secure the comeback, leaving Lens stunned.
Strasbourg Ends Lyon’s Winning Streak
Strasbourg handed Lyon a 3–1 defeat at Stade de la Meinau, ending Lyon’s 13-game winning streak across all competitions.
Strasbourg dominated from the start. Martial Godo opened the scoring in the 37th minute, assisted by Diego Moreira, who later added a second goal via a deflected long-range shot.
Lyon responded through Corentin Tolisso in the 59th minute, but Joaquín Panichelli sealed the victory with a late penalty after Samir El Mourabet was fouled in the box.
The match was further complicated for Lyon by an early injury to top scorer Pavel Šulc. Brazilian forward Endrick also endured a frustrating afternoon, seeing a central shot saved easily.
Strasbourg move up to seventh, while Lyon will aim to restart their winning run against Marseille in the next round.
Rennes Start Franck Haise Era With Victory
New Rennes coach Franck Haise began his tenure in style with a 3–0 win over Auxerre. Midfielder Mahdi Camara scored twice in the first half, either side of a goal from Esteban Lepaul, to put Rennes firmly in control by halftime.
The victory moves Rennes three points behind fourth-placed Marseille and level on goal difference with fifth-place Lille.
Lille Edge Angers
Lille claimed a narrow 1–0 win at Angers thanks to a penalty converted by veteran striker Olivier Giroud in first-half stoppage time.
Other Results
Nice were held 3–3 at home by Lorient, conceding a late equalizer five minutes into stoppage time.
Nantes secured a 2–0 home victory over Le Havre, moving them closer to safety in the relegation battle.
