Liverpool Agrees Record-Breaking Deal To Sign Alexander Isak From Newcastle
Premier League champions Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, according to multiple media reports on Monday.
The Swedish forward is expected to join the Reds in a deal reported to be around £130 million ($176 million), potentially setting a new British record transfer fee.
The Athletic reported that Isak will undergo a medical on Monday before completing a six-year deal with the Merseyside club.
The fee is expected to set a new Premier League transfer record, surpassing the £106 million Chelsea paid Benfica for Enzo Fernández in 2023.
The 25-year-old scored 23 Premier League goals last season, second only to Mohamed Salah. His performances helped Newcastle United secure a spot in the Champions League.
He has been the subject of a protracted and acrimonious transfer saga this summer, training away from the rest of the Newcastle squad after making clear his desire to move to Liverpool.
Newcastle reportedly rejected an initial £110 million bid for Isak earlier this summer.
The deal moved closer after Newcastle United signed German international striker Nick Woltemade on Saturday for a club-record fee reportedly worth up to £69 million.
Isak is poised to be the latest blockbuster signing in Liverpool’s lavish summer spending spree, which also completed a massive deal to bring in German midfielder, Florian Wirtz.
The Reds have also signed French attacker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, and Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe had hinted for the first time on Friday that he might be open to allowing Isak to leave because of the impact a sale would have on Newcastle’s profit and sustainability calculations.
Newcastle were compelled to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh last year to avoid a points deduction, and a big profit on Isak could further ease their Profit and Sustainability Regulations worries.
Meanwhile, Liverpool has strengthened their squad with fresh signings.
However, they have yet to resemble the dominant side that clinched the Premier League title with four games to spare last season.
Liverpool still leads the table with three wins from three, capped by a 1-0 victory over last season’s runners-up Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday.
How much will Real Sociedad make from Isak’s €150m move to Liverpool?
Liverpool fans have welcomed news of an agreement to sign Isak, while Real Sociedad also stands to benefit thanks to a sell-on clause included when they sold him to Newcastle three years ago.
The Sweden striker, who trained at La Real’s facilities during his strike earlier this summer, joined Newcastle for €70m in 2022.
With his move to Liverpool reportedly worth €150m, Sociedad are set to pocket an additional €8m.
Newcastle, meanwhile, sit 17th after being held to a goalless draw against Leeds United.
