Liverpool Maintains Perfect Start With Merseyside Derby Win Over Everton
Liverpool continued their flawless start to the 2025/26 Premier League season with a 2-1 victory over Everton at Anfield, securing their fifth straight league win.
This result marks just the third time in history that the Reds have opened a Premier League campaign with five consecutive victories, emphasizing their early-season dominance under new manager Arne Slot.
A Flying Start at Anfield
Liverpool’s season so far has been characterized by late winners, but the Merseyside derby told a different story. Determined to take control from the outset, the Reds burst into life inside the opening quarter-hour.
Mohamed Salah, as so often, was the catalyst in 12 minutes, the Egyptian playmaker clipped a perfectly weighted pass in behind Everton’s defence for Ryan Gravenberch. The Dutch midfielder showed composure and quality, lofting a sumptuous finish beyond Jordan Pickford to give the hosts a deserved early lead.
Buoyed by the opener, Liverpool pressed relentlessly, with Salah almost adding his own name to the scoresheet moments later. Picking the ball up on the edge of the area, he unleashed a powerful strike that flew narrowly over the bar, much to the relief of the Everton fans behind the goal.
Gravenberch Pulls the Strings
Everton offered little in the opening half but did create one promising moment when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, signed this summer, failed to make the most of a good opportunity after neat work from Jack Grealish. That miss proved costly almost immediately.
Liverpool doubled their advantage soon after, and once again, Gravenberch was at the heart of it. This time turning provider, the midfielder threaded a precise through ball into the path of Hugo Ekitike. The French forward stayed composed and slid the ball beneath the advancing Pickford.
The Toffees nearly pulled one back just before the break when Liverpool almost self-destructed. A misplaced pass from Alisson was intercepted by Iliman Ndiaye, who quickly squared for Beto.
However, on the stretch, the striker couldn’t find the finish, sending his effort tamely toward the Kop and letting Liverpool off the hook.
A Derby That Lived Up to the Hype
While the second half had fewer clear-cut chances than the frantic opening period, the intensity never dropped. Everton fought hard to get back into the game, showing more attacking intent after the interval, but Liverpool’s structure and pressing prevented the Toffees from gaining real momentum.
Eventually, Everton managed to pull one back late on through a scrappy effort that gave them a glimmer of hope. But it proved too little, too late, as Slot’s side saw out the remaining minutes with composure to maintain their perfect record.
What’s Next?
Liverpool’s victory keeps them in hot pursuit of early leaders and builds further belief that this could be a season of silverware at Anfield.
Everton, meanwhile, must regroup quickly, as their tough start to the campaign leaves them with plenty of questions to answer.
