Man Utd Target Barcelona Left-Back Alejandro Balde Ahead Of Summer
Manchester United have reportedly taken a significant step in their summer recruitment plans by submitting an offer of around £35 million for Alejandro Balde, according to reports in Spain.
After a quiet winter transfer window, the club now appears ready to reshape the squad ahead of next season.
Managerial Stability Before Transfers
United’s winter focus centered on restructuring its leadership rather than making new signings. Former manager Rúben Amorim was dismissed in early January, paving the way for Michael Carrick to take charge until the end of the season.
Under Carrick, the team has rebounded impressively, winning four of five matches and drawing the other. This revival reduced the urgency for winter additions but set the stage for a more ambitious summer window.
Barcelona’s Position and Balde’s Decision
Reports indicate that FC Barcelona is open to negotiating but hopes to secure a higher fee for Balde.
The defender, who is still just 22 and yet to reach his full potential, has made 17 La Liga starts this season and remains a valued part of Barcelona’s long-term plans. He must now decide whether a move to the Premier League aligns with his career ambitions.
United’s Left-Back Situation
United’s current first-choice left-back, Luke Shaw, has struggled with recurring injuries, and at over 30 years old, he is entering the later chapters of his career.
A younger and more dynamic option is needed for both squad depth and long-term stability. Balde, with his age, ability, and top-level experience, represents an ideal solution.
Balde’s playing profile aligns with the modern demands of the Premier League. His athleticism stands out immediately, with explosive acceleration and elite recovery speed that suit the league’s fast transitions.
His tactical understanding, shaped by Barcelona’s possession-based structure, allows him to invert into midfield, hold width on the outside, or join advanced phases of play, giving United more flexibility in build-up and attacking patterns.
In possession, Balde contributes significantly to ball progression. He is comfortable carrying the ball under pressure and plays crisp, progressive passes from deep areas, traits United have missed whenever Shaw has been unavailable.
Defensively, he excels in one-on-one situations, using agility and timing to neutralize wide threats while also being reliable when defending the back post.
Given his age, Balde fits neatly into a medium-term squad build and offers substantial resale value. His Champions League experience adds another layer of appeal, and under elite coaching, his raw qualities still have room to grow.
Barcelona is expected to push for a larger fee, knowing the player’s ceiling and United’s need for reinforcement in that position.
Whether the Red Devils decide to meet a higher valuation remains to be seen, but their interest signals clear intent.
