‎Manchester United have announced the signing of forward Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford for a reported fee of £71 million, including add-ons.

‎Mbeumo is their second summer signing, following the recent arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and will bolster their attacking options.

‎The Cameroon international scored 20 goals while also providing seven assists in the Premier League last season, starting every game as Brentford finished 10th.

‎“My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.

‎“Everybody told me about the environment that is being created here and how exciting the plans are for the future. This is a massive club, with an incredible stadium and amazing fans. We are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies.”

‎After six years at Brentford, the Cameroon international departs with a record of 70 goals and 51 assists in 242 appearances for the club.

‎United was in negotiations to sign for Mbeumo for several weeks. Brentford made it clear during negotiations that they value Mbeumo above the £62.5 million paid for Cunha.

‎Sources suggest there is some frustration at Manchester United over how Brentford handled the negotiations. They believe Brentford’s valuation kept changing, reaching as high as £70 million plus £7 million in add-ons.

‎United feel Brentford pressured Mbeumo to reject their offer in favor of Newcastle or Tottenham.

‎Additionally, they suspect Brentford wanted the forward to reduce his personal terms to allow for a larger club-to-club fee.

‎Jason Wilcox, Director of Football, said, “Bryan’s goals and assists record in the Premier League is exceptional, his remarkable consistency has put him amongst the most productive players in England for the last three seasons.

‎“Bryan’s belief in our project and determination to join the club confirmed that he was the perfect fit for Manchester United and the culture that we are developing.

‎“We are delighted to have secured another one of our primary targets ahead of the pre-season tour. The experience in the US will be the perfect opportunity for Bryan to work with Ruben and his new teammates as we prepare for an exciting season ahead.”

‎United was also made aware of interest from Arsenal and a late move by Chelsea to hijack the deal.

‎Meanwhile, Brentford believes that Manchester United intentionally negotiated a high wage with Mbeumo to persuade him to join Old Trafford, only to then offer lower-than-expected transfer fees during the formal talks.

‎Mbeumo may make his debut for Manchester United during their three-match preseason tour of the United States.

‎Ruben Amorim’s team is scheduled to fly to the U.S. on Tuesday, where they will play three games in Chicago, New York, and Atlanta.
