Manchester United Target Lammens Or Martinez In Deadline Day Signing Push
Ruben Amorim has been assured that a new first-choice goalkeeper will arrive by the end of today.
He has been pressing for a Manchester United No. 1 since the end of last season, and he is now close to achieving his goal, with discussions ongoing about who the successor will be.
Senne Lammens was expected to arrive from Royal Antwerp but difficulties have cropped up over his total cost. There has also been a note of caution inside United because he is not yet proven at the very top level, and the club needs assurances right now.
Aston Villa have entered the race for Lammens, joining several overseas clubs, while United are also in talks over Emi Martínez
He brings a level of experience regarded as a step above the other options, and the next goalkeeper is seen as essential to provide a stronger sense of authority in his area.
In most positions, United would prefer to go for a youthful option who could develop for the long term, but this one comes with different considerations.
Amorim wants a keeper he can trust to do the basics well but also to instil greater confidence in his defenders.
Last season, things got so bad with Andre Onana that sources say Amorim even told his players to reduce the number of back passes they were making to him.
Onana has been circulating this week and is expected to depart Old Trafford, with Turkey and Italy cited as possible destinations, though United aim to secure an incoming deal first.
Both Onana and Altay Bayindir have been error-prone early this season, and Amorim knows he needs improved options if they are to achieve their goal of qualifying for Europe.
