Borussia Dortmund’s attacking midfielder, Marco Reus, announced on Friday that he will be departing the club at the end of the season.

This decision comes after both parties reached a mutual agreement not to extend his contract. Reus has been with the club since 2012 and previously spent ten years as a youth player at the Ruhr Valley club.

During his time at Dortmund, he scored 168 goals in 424 matches and provided 128 assists. Reus, renowned for his talent, goal-scoring skills, and tactical brilliance, served as the team’s captain for five years until 2023.

Although Marco Reus secured two German Cups during his time at Borussia Dortmund, he narrowly missed out on winning his first Bundesliga title last season on the final matchday.

Dortmund currently competes in the Champions League semi-finals, with a 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg this week, Reus has the opportunity to potentially conclude his final season with the prestigious European club title.

“The club and I decided not to extend the contract,” Reus said in a video statement. “I have spent more than half my life at this club. I am proud and happy to have played for so many years here. I am at a loss for words. It is important to let you, the fans, know first because we still have a big goal. We want to go to Wembley (for the final) and bring the trophy back to Dortmund.”

“I already know now that I will find it difficult to say goodbye at the end of the season,” Reus said. “And yet I’m happy that there is now clarity and that we can focus fully on the very important final games that we still have to play.”

“We have a big objective in our sights that we all want to achieve together. To do so, we will need every single one of our unbelievable fans, to whom I would like to express my sincere thanks for their unbelievable support over the years.” He stated.

Dortmund will travel to France on Tuesday to play PSG in the return leg, aiming to secure a spot in the Champions League final for the first time since 2013.
