Mohamed Salah has broken a Premier League record on the opening day of the season after scoring for Liverpool against Ipswich Town.

The Egyptian took advantage of Dominik Szoboszlai’s pass, sliding the ball beneath Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton to double Liverpool’s lead, which was scored to Diogo Jota for Arne Slot’s side.

Salah’s strike was the ninth time he’s scored on the first day of a Premier League season, pulling one clear of Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, and Alan Shearer.

The 31-year-old previously found the net on his Liverpool debut, scoring against Watford on the opening day of the 2017/18 season, before going on to score goals against West Ham, Norwich City (2), Leeds United (a hat-trick), and Fulham.

The only time Salah has failed to score on the first day of the season was during 2023/24, when Liverpool drew 1-1 with Chelsea.

Salah’s goal against Ipswich wasn’t his only impact in the half, he also provided the assist for Jota’s opening goal. After receiving a through ball from Trent Alexander-Arnold, he dribbled past Ipswich’s left-back, Leif Davis, and delivered a perfect pass to his Portuguese teammate, allowing him to find the back of the net.

The Egypt international now has 14 goal involvements on the opening day of the Premier League season, setting another record in the process.

The game also marked Salah’s 350th appearance for Liverpool an indicator of his legendary status at Anfield.
