‎Newcastle United announced on Tuesday that they have signed German defender Malick Thiaw from AC Milan in Italy’s Serie A.

‎Although the club did not disclose financial terms, British media reports stated the transfer fee was around £34.6 million ($46.69 million) for the 24-year-old.

‎Thiaw played a central role in Milan’s defense last season, appearing 31 times in all competitions, though his playing time waned toward the end of the Serie A campaign as the side finished in eighth place.

‎He has also played three times for Germany, with all three of those appearances coming in 2023.

‎”We’re really pleased to have Malick on board. He’s a player I’ve admired for a long time and somebody who will add real quality to our defensive options,” Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said in a statement.

‎Thiaw becomes Newcastle’s third summer signing, following the arrivals of winger Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton.

‎Newcastle finished last season fifth, earning a Champions League berth.

‎They start the new campaign with a trip to Aston Villa on Saturday.
