Pep Guardiola ‘Lying’, Man City ‘Ungrateful’ – Joao Cancelo Blows Hot In Interview
Portuguese talented full-back currently playing for Barcelona, Joao Cancelo has criticized his parent club, Manchester City and_ coach Pep Guardiola, in a recent interview.
In the interview with A Bola, Cancelo opened up about his experiences at Manchester City, his dreams of Champions League glory, and_ the challenges he faces at Barcelona.
Champions League Dream and_ Barcelona Journey
Cancelo’s aspirations of Champions League success with Barcelona shine through his words “Since I came here it has always been a dream.
“Let’s dream, we have every right to do so.”
His commitment to the club is evident as he emphasizes the importance of approaching each game with determination and focus.
Speaking about his decision to join Barcelona and the financial sacrifices he made, Cancelo states, “I came to Barcelona, I lowered my salary, and_ that doesn’t bother me in the least… I would like to be here next year fighting for titles in Spain.”
His dedication to the club’s success is unshaken despite the challenges that may lie ahead.
Facing Challenges and Mentality
Cancelo’s mental fortitude is evidence of his resilience. Reflecting on the pressure of playing for Barcelona, he reveals, “Pressure affects some more than others. It doesn’t affect me much because I created a barrier.
“I have a very strong mentality… I have always positively looked at life.”
Manchester City Departure
Addressing his time at Manchester City, Cancelo expresses his disappointment with how his contributions and consistency were underappreciated “I think Manchester City was a little ungrateful to me… I never failed in my commitment to the club.
“I don’t look at the stats, I enjoy it game by game… even though in the championship collectively we are not in the position we want to be.”
Cancelo stated, “There were fake stories about me at City. I’ve never been a bad teammate.
“I remember once I was robbed and_ assaulted at home and the next day I was playing at Emirates against Arsenal.
“These are things you don’t forget, I left my wife and_ daughter alone at home still scared, in shock, to play for City.
“At City, they were a bit ungrateful to talk about me like this, I’ve been an important player for them.”
Cancelo insisted that he ‘wishes’ everything goes well at Man City but also adds that he made the right choice to leave on loan in January 2023 – despite missing out on the Treble.
He said “Certain things dictated that I was loaned last year to Bayern Munich. I have no regrets, even if City won the Champions League. I feel like I made the right choice, that I went to a club that wanted me, even before renewing my contract. It was a club that gave me a lot in the six months I was there.”
After his time with Bayern Munich, he joined Barcelona on loan where he has taken on a lower salary given the club’s financial issues.
After letting Cancelo leave on loan last season, Guardiola said: ‘I wish him the very best.”
He has been an incredible figure in winning two Premier League titles.
Cancelo will return to Man City this summer though it appears likely that he will leave the club.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed their plans to keep Cancelo next season, though the club’s financial situation could cause an obstacle.
