PGMOL Drops Referee From Liverpool Vs Arsenal Clash Following Stamford Bridge VAR Controversy
Referee Michael Salisbury has been removed from VAR duties for Sunday’s Liverpool vs. Arsenal match after PGMOL ruled that his decision to disallow Josh King’s goal for Fulham against Chelsea on Saturday was incorrect.
King believed he had opened the scoring for Fulham in the 22nd minute at Stamford Bridge. Salisbury ruled a foul in the build-up by Trevoh Chalobah and instructed referee Rob Jones to overturn the decision from goal to no goal.
After the game, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) chief Howard Webb would admit it was a mistake to chalk the goal off. Fulham would go on to lose the game 2-0 to their West London rivals.
He said the decision to rule out the goal did not reach the bar for a VAR intervention because it wasn’t a clear error by the referee, and it should have been a “referee’s call.”
Salisbury has been replaced by Chris Kavanagh for the Liverpool vs. Arsenal game, which kicks off at 14:30 WAT.
