Premier League Roundup: Arsenal Cruises Past Villa As Chelsea Stumbles Against Bournemouth
Arsenal will finish 2025 at the top of the Premier League after a dominant 4-1 win over Aston Villa at the Emirates on Tuesday.
All four goals came in the second half, highlighting the team’s tactical flexibility and sharp finishing. The victory sends a clear message as the title race enters its decisive stages.
The fourth goal, scored by substitute Gabriel Jesus just one minute after entering the pitch, showed the depth of Arsenal’s bench a critical asset for Mikel Arteta this season. Arteta, visibly elated, shared high-fives with his coaching staff as the final whistle blew.
This victory extended Arsenal’s lead to five points over Manchester City, who will face Sunderland on New Year’s Day, and six points ahead of third-place Villa.
“It is a beautiful evening. That was a very tough match, as we knew it would be, because they are a top opponent to play against,” Arteta told Sky Sports.
“The way we started the second half was amazing, we really turned things up and were efficient in everything that we did.”
Arsenal’s hunger for silverware is evident, with the club having not won the Premier League since 2004. “In 2026, we know what we want,” Arteta added.
Villa manager Unai Emery later addressed his decision not to shake Arteta’s hand post-match, citing the cold conditions at the Emirates.
“Always, my routine is to go to the opposition coach, shake hands, and go inside. If he is not doing the same rule, I can’t wait … it was cold,” Emery told Sky Sports.
Arsenal’s Collective Firepower
One of Arsenal’s standout qualities this season is its ability to share goals across the squad. Defender Gabriel Magalhães opened the scoring early in the second half with a header from a corner, followed by Martín Zubimendi’s precise finish in the 52nd minute.
Leandro Trossard curled in a fine third goal in the 69th minute and played a key role in Jesus’ fourth, which capped off a lightning-fast counterattack in the 78th minute.
Ollie Watkins grabbed a consolation goal for Villa during injury time, but it did little to dampen Arsenal’s dominant performance.
The win was even more impressive considering the absence of key midfielder Declan Rice, sidelined with a knee injury, and the fact that Villa had been riding an 11-game winning streak in all competitions.
Chelsea Stumble Against Bournemouth
Elsewhere in the league, Chelsea were held to a 2-2 home draw against Bournemouth. David Brooks opened the scoring for the visitors from close range after Chelsea failed to clear a throw-in.
Cole Palmer equalized via a penalty following a video review, and Enzo Fernández gave Chelsea the lead shortly after.
However, defensive lapses allowed Bournemouth to grab a late equalizer through Justin Kluivert’s header. The result leaves Chelsea fifth, level on 30 points with Manchester United in sixth.
Manchester United Held by Wolves
Manchester United was unable to capitalize at home, drawing 1-1 against rock-bottom Wolverhampton.
Joshua Zirkzee gave United the lead with a deflected strike in the 27th minute, but Ladislav Krejčí’s powerful header just before halftime secured a point for Wolves.
Patrick Dorgu’s injury-time goal for United was ruled out by VAR for offside, leaving fans frustrated as boos filled Old Trafford while Wolves supporters celebrated their hard-earned point.
Newcastle and Everton on the Rise
Newcastle moved into 10th place thanks to a 3-1 victory over Burnley.
Yoane Wissa grabbed his first league goal for the club, with Joelinton assisting early in the game. Despite Josh Laurent’s reply for Burnley, Bruno Guimarães sealed the win with a stoppage-time lob.
Everton also impressed, defeating Nottingham Forest 2-0. James Garner opened the scoring in the 19th minute and later delivered a defence-splitting pass for Thierno Barry to finish the win.
Meanwhile, West Ham and Brighton played out a thrilling 2-2 draw.
Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paquetá combined beautifully for West Ham’s opener, only for Danny Welbeck and Joël Veltman to rescue points for Brighton.
