Racism: Chelsea Begins Disciplinary Process On Fofana, Enzo Fernandez Controversy
Chelsea has commenced an internal disciplinary process in response to a controversy on social media involving two of its players, Wesley Fofana and Enzo Fernandez.
Sportxparte reports that the dispute arose following Fofana’s critique of a video featuring Fernandez, which he labelled as “uninhibited racism.”
This video, captured during a match where Argentina’s football team was observed singing chants that included highly offensive and discriminatory language, was uploaded by Fernandez following Argentina’s victory in the Copa America final against Colombia.
In response, the FFF has announced its intention to lodge a formal complaint with FIFA, the international governing body of football, regarding the chants.
This could lead to a formal investigation and potential sanctions against the players and the national team.
Fernandez Fumes
Responding to the backlash, Fernandez expressed deep regret on Instagram, stating, “The song includes highly offensive language, and there is no excuse for these words. I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologize for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations. That video, that moment, those words do not reflect my character or beliefs. I am truly sorry.”
Chelsea released a statement confirming the disciplinary action and reiterating the club’s unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion, aiming to reassure the fans and the public.
“Chelsea Football Club unequivocally denounces all forms of discriminatory behaviour, considering them completely unacceptable,” the statement read, aiming to align the audience with the club’s values.
“We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities, and identities feel welcome. We acknowledge and appreciate our player’s public apology and will use this as an opportunity to educate. The club has instigated an internal disciplinary procedure.”
Some supporters reportedly sang the controversial chants following Argentina’s victory over France in the World Cup final in 2022.
FFF Reacts
The FFF, condemning the remarks, stated, “Faced with the seriousness of these shocking remarks, which are contrary to the values of sport and human rights, the president of the FFF decided to appeal to his Argentinian counterpart and FIFA directly and to file a legal complaint for racially offensive and discriminatory remarks.”
