Rodri Withdraws From Spain Squad After Suffering Hamstring Injury
Spain has confirmed that Manchester City midfielder, Rodri Hernández, will miss their upcoming World Cup qualifiers due to a hamstring injury.
The Spanish Football Federation announced on Monday that Rodri has been ruled out of the squad. Luis de la Fuente’s side faces Georgia on October 11 and Bulgaria three days later.
The 29-year-old was taken off in the 21st minute of City’s Premier League win over Brentford on Sunday, confirming after the game he had felt discomfort in his hamstring.
Rodri sought to downplay the seriousness of the injury after the match.
”I felt a little bit in the hamstring but it seems as though it’s not that much,” Rodri told Sky Sports.
”I stretched a bit, like in the final of the Euros [when he had to go off injured]. But the most important thing is it’s not that big.”
Rodri played a pivotal role in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory but sustained a serious knee injury in September that year, causing him to miss most of the previous season while he recovered.
Spain has not announced whether it will call up a replacement for the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner.
On Sunday, coach Luis de la Fuente named Celta Vigo forward Borja Iglesias to replace the injured Barcelona star Lamine Yamal.
