Sam Kerr Signs New Contract Extension With Chelsea
Chelsea’s forward, Sam Kerr, has extended her contract until 2026, as announced by the Women’s Super League (WSL) champions on Thursday.
Kerr, who holds the record as Australia’s top scorer with 69 goals in 128 appearances, has been out of action since sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury during a Chelsea training session in January.
“I’m excited to continue to push and to try to win trophies for Chelsea,” Kerr, whose contract was set to expire this year, said in a statement.
Since joining the London side in the 2019/20 season, she has scored 99 goals in 128 matches. Throughout her time at Chelsea, she has won five WSL titles, three FA Cups, and two League Cups.
Next season, the forward will be at the forefront as Chelsea enters a new era, with coach Emma Hayes departing after nearly 12 years to take on the role of head coach for the US women’s national team.
Chelsea have appointed Sonia Bompastor as their new head coach on a four-year contract.
“After four years, it’s really hard to sum up how I feel,” Kerr added in a video posted on Chelsea’s social media.
“My time at Chelsea has been unforgettable, with lots of great memories made, lifelong dreams, and winning trophies. To the fans, just remember that I will always be Chelsea. I hope you welcome Sonia with open arms and keep supporting the girls.”
The Matildas captain is scheduled to stand trial in the UK next year for a charge of racially aggravated harassment of a police officer in January 2023. She entered a plea of not guilty in March.
