Scholes Pins Man United’s Draw On Onana: Goalkeeping Errors Cost Red Devils In UCL Match
Manchester United’s Champions League clash against Galatasaray on Wednesday night left club legend Paul Scholes pointing fingers at goalkeeper Andre Onana for the three goals conceded in a thrilling 3-3 draw.
Initially, the Red Devils surged ahead with goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes, dominating the match. However, their lead was swiftly challenged when Hakim Ziyech’s crafty free-kick left Onana rooted, pegging back United’s advantage.
Scott McTominay restored the two-goal cushion, only for Onana to misjudge another Ziyech set-piece, allowing Galatasaray to claw back into the game. Kerem Akturkoglu’s ferocious strike then levelled the scores, sealing a dramatic deadlock.
Reflecting on the game on TNT Sports, Scholes didn’t mince words, expressing his concerns about Onana’s performance: “He instils nervousness, not just in the defence but throughout the team. Even routine saves appear incredibly challenging for him.”
Scholes analyzed the goals further, pinpointing Onana’s errors: “Beaten at the near post for Galatasaray’s third goal. While there might be goalkeeper experts who could delve deeper, I still feel he shouldn’t have conceded at the near post. His positioning was lacking. From my perspective, all three goals boil down to his errors. His technique seemed awkward and contributed to the team’s downfall.”
Scholes’ assessment emphasized the pivotal role played by Onana’s mistakes, costing Manchester United crucial points in the Champions League encounter against Galatasaray.
