Scott McTominay Shines At Napoli After Leaving Manchester United Shadow
Scott McTominay has transitioned from playing on the sidelines at Manchester United to taking center stage for Napoli after securing his first league title in a superb debut season in Serie A.
The Scotland midfielder has a strong case for Player of the Season in Italy, having become the key figure in Napoli’s midfield under Antonio Conte.
Conte has granted him the seniority and role he never achieved at United after rising through the youth ranks.
A seasoned international footballer, McTominay made the bold decision to leave one of the world’s biggest clubs in pursuit of true success.
During his eight seasons at Old Trafford, he won an FA Cup and a League Cup. He then aimed to become the driving force behind his new team, achieving a significant impact.
Thirteen goals and four assists in all competitions are a testament to how quickly McTominay adapted to life in Naples, a city he has taken to with relish and Italian football.
”It’s a beautiful country, it’s actually somewhere where I’ve not been throughout my life, which is surprising because I love the culture here, I love the food, I love the way the people are, they’re so welcoming,” McTominay said in a recent interview with DAZN.
”It’s got so many amazing different cities, obviously, Naples for me being the number one. Being able to experience all that with the people here is incredible.
”Hopefully the people can see that I’m giving my all every time I go on the pitch. That’s all you can do as a football player.”
McTominay has been dubbed “McFratm,” which means “McBrother” or “McBro” in Neapolitan, by local boy Pasquale Mazzocchi, a nickname he rates even higher than “McTerminator” and “MacGyver.”
‘Braveheart’
These nicknames highlight the strong bond McTominay quickly formed with Napoli fans, who embraced him from the moment he arrived. His transfer from United was met with enthusiasm, starting from his first step off the plane at Capodichino airport.
Hundreds of fans awaited and mobbed him at the arrivals area, giving him a warm Naples welcome. At that time, few, possibly only Conte, could have predicted the extent of his impact.
In August, Napoli hurried to sign new players to satisfy their famously fiery manager’s demands.
Napoli had already been walloped 3-0 at Verona in their opening league match of the campaign when McTominay arrived alongside Romelu Lukaku and another Scotsman, Billy Gilmour, with the season already underway.
The specter of the disastrous defense of their 2023 Scudetto was still hanging around the Castel Volturno training ground.
By the end of October, Napoli sat at the top of the table, engaged in a fierce three-way title race with Inter Milan and Atalanta. McTominay was at the heart of nearly everything positive the team produced.
Fans had already renamed McTominay “Braveheart” by that point, and he was soon immortalized in a mural of the sort Napoli supporters reserve for their favorite players, most famously for Diego Maradona.
And now McTominay has emulated possibly the greatest-ever footballer by bringing Scudetto joy to Naples while becoming the player he was never given a chance to be at United.
