Tottenham Hotspur Open Talks For Eberechi Eze In Bid To Beat Arsenal To Him
Tottenham have entered discussions to sign Eberechi Eze and are eager to outpace Arsenal in securing the Crystal Palace attacker.
Eze, whose £68m release clause expires on Friday, is at the center of a rivalry between the two north London clubs.
Arsenal have been the favorites to land him but have not yet submitted an offer to Palace, noting they must offload some attacking players before pursuing Eze.
Arsenal’s hold-up while seeking takers for Leandro Trossard has created an opening for Spurs to push ahead with their long-standing pursuit.
Under new Spurs manager Thomas Frank, the team is seeking attacking reinforcements after James Maddison suffered a long-term knee injury and they missed out on Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White.
They can also appeal to Eze with Champions League football after their Europa League triumph last season.
An agreement is yet to be reached, though, and Spurs do not intend to meet Eze’s clause. A further complication for Spurs is that Arsenal are believed to be the 27-year-old’s favoured destination should he leave Palace.
Arsenal, having strengthened their forward line with Viktor Gyökeres and Noni Madueke this summer, are aiming to reclaim the title for the first time since 2004. They’ve invested around £200m and are keen to move on players they no longer want.
Leandro Trossard has dropped down the attack pecking order, and Fábio Vieira appears unlikely to have a future at the club.
Arteta is understood to have identified Eze as a player capable of giving Arsenal an extra edge against deep defences. Creativity was a problem for the Spaniard’s team last season.
Their hopes of keeping up with Liverpool foundered on a chronic lack of ruthlessness, causing them to draw too many winnable games.
Palace, having failed to regain a Europa League berth, will be eager to keep hold of their best attacker. Eze, aiming to secure a place in England’s squad for next summer’s World Cup, scored the winner in last season’s FA Cup final.
He has emerged as one of the league’s most dangerous talents.
Palace are looking to sell Marc Guéhi to prevent losing him for free when his contract expires next summer. He is a transfer target for Liverpool.
