UEFA Makes Fresh Announcement On VAR Ahead Of Euro 2024 Kick-Off
Attendees at the Euro 2024 tournament will receive additional, more comprehensive details regarding video-assisted refereeing rulings compared to previous editions, according to UEFA.
Roberto Rosetti, the leader of UEFA’s refereeing panel, has mentioned that displays at venues in Germany will offer “technical clarifications” of VAR judgments to enhance the comprehension of viewers.
A common complaint about the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system since it has been in use extensively is the challenge fans face in grasping the rationale behind specific referee decisions.
“After the video assistance, the technical explanation of the decision will be shown on the giant screens in the stadiums,” Rosetti explained earlier at a press briefing at the Allianz Arena, ahead of the tournament opener on Friday.
The leader of the UEFA refereeing panel offered an example of the type of information fans will be given after a VAR call.
“Penalty, handball, Germany’s number nine touched the ball with his left hand, which was in an unnatural position, over his shoulder and extending away from his body,” he said.
It could be recalled that during the 2023 Women’s World Cup, officials made the announcement to the crowd in person before resuming the game.
Rosetti on Thursday mentioned that referees will have the opportunity to clarify their decisions to the team captains they are officiating, but players who question the calls or request details will receive a warning.
Sportxparte reports that this regulation was implemented in every UEFA club competition final, resulting in two yellow cards in the Champions League final, two yellow cards in the Europa League final, and one yellow card in the Conference League final.
“We do this for the next generations… for football and the image of the game, for the young players and for the young referees,” said Rosetti.
He further stated that for teams with a goalkeeper as captain, an outfield player would be chosen before the match to stand in.
