Who Is Sverre Nypan? Manchester City Set To Sign Rising Star Ahead Of Arsenal And Aston Villa

‎Manchester City are nearing an agreement to sign Rosenborg midfielder Sverre Nypan.

‎The 18-year-old has attracted interest from several clubs, but he is now set to join City. Subject to finalizing personal terms, this transfer is expected to be a record fee for a player from the Norwegian league.

‎Nypan is expected to be loaned out for a season to aid in his development.

‎In January, City were not among the clubs interested in him, as several other European teams pursued the Norway youth international.

‎Arsenal, Aston Villa, and Girona, which is also part of the City Football Group (CFG), had shown interest, but eventually, they accepted that they would not land him.

‎Arsenal hosted Nypan but couldn’t persuade the teenager to move, so he decided to stay until the summer. Aston Villa traveled to Norway to present their vision, but they were unable to secure a deal.

‎Later, Manchester City entered the competition, successfully convincing Nypan and his family to join them at the Etihad Stadium.

‎Nypan has already played 70 senior games for Rosenborg, who sit third in the 2025 Eliteserien after 11 games, and is a Norway Under-21 international.

‎Who is Sverre Nypan?

‎Nypan stands out as a striking talent. Following in the footsteps of Norway’s top prospects like Erling Haaland, Martin Odegaard, and Antonio Nusa, he emerges as another promising young star.

‎Hailing from Trondheim, Nypan developed his football skills locally with Nardo FK before joining Rosenborg in 2022.

‎Rosenborg is the city’s premier club and, historically, the most successful team in Norwegian football.

‎Nypan was training with their first team at 14. He was a Norwegian under-21 international a year later.

‎While he may not yet be young enough to surpass Odegaard as the youngest player in Eliteserien history, Odegaard was just 15 years and 118 days old when he debuted for Stromsgodset in 2014. Nypan’s progress is nonetheless impressive.

‎During the 2024 season, he scored eight goals for Rosenborg and led the team with six assists, quickly drawing significant attention from the national spotlight.

‎Direct comparisons with Odegaard are tempting and quite understandable, but Nypan is a more versatile midfielder. He is capable of passing, dribbling, creating chances, and scoring, but he tends to operate across different areas of the pitch.

‎Nypan is primarily a No. 8 more focused on balance and work rate rather than a traditional No. 10, and he plays with fewer flamboyant touches.
