World Cup Playoffs: DR Congo Seal Win Over Cameroon To Set Up Nigeria Clash
Chancel Mbemba scored a dramatic last-minute winner as the Democratic Republic of Congo defeated Cameroon 1-0 in Thursday’s World Cup Africa playoff.
The captain arrived unmarked at the back post to turn in Brian Cipenga’s corner. The victory keeps DR Congo firmly in the race for qualification to next year’s finals.
The Congolese will meet Nigeria in the playoff final in Rabat on Sunday, after beating Gabon 4-1 in extra time on Thursday.
After conceding a late equaliser in regulation time, the Super Eagles edged ahead in extra time with Victor Osimhen finding the net twice.
Sunday’s victor will advance to the inter-confederation playoffs in March, where six teams will compete for two spots at the 2026 finals in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Cameroon’s eight previous World Cup final appearances remain a record for an African nation, but they offered little advantage against a resolute Congolese side in a rain-soaked match.
In the opening period, Congolese attackers Noah Sadiki and Theo Bongond had early chances.
However, Cameroon also had opportunities in the first half when Karl Etta Eyong failed to get a touch to Bryan Mbeumo’s probing free kick.
Despite being an injury doubt before kickoff, Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana produced a fine save to deny Bongonda around the hour mark.
Minutes later, Mbeumo raced onto a through ball but fired narrowly wide from close range.
Etta Eyong had two late half-chances, yet DR Congo finished the stronger before Mbemba sealed the win.
