Alphonso Davies Suffers Devastating Torn ACL While On Duty With Canada
Bayern Munich has announced that Alphonso Davies has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
This injury will prevent him from participating in the latter stages of the Champions League as well as this summer’s Gold Cup with Canada.
Davies will undergo surgery to correct the issue and is likely to be out of action for at least nine months, potentially giving him limited time to get fully up to speed ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Bayern Munich has also confirmed that Dayot Upamecano, a teammate of Alphonso Davies, is dealing with a knee injury that will keep him out of action for several weeks.
”Unfortunately, there’s always the risk of players returning from international breaks with injuries this time, we’ve been hit particularly hard,” Bayern’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, said in a club statement.
”The absence of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano weighs heavily on FC Bayern. Phonzy will get all the support he needs on his road to recovery.
”We’ll also be keeping a close eye on Upa in the coming weeks and expect him to be available again soon. We have a strong squad and will compensate for these absences.
”We’ll now grow even closer together. The quality is there to continue pursuing our big goals.”
Davies recently put an end to the prolonged speculation about a potential move to Real Madrid by signing a new five-year contract with Bayern, securing his future with the Bavarian giants alongside attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala.
The 24-year-old has been a crucial player for Vincent Kompany’s Bayern, who are striving to regain their Bundesliga title from Bayer Leverkusen.
However, the 33-time champions will face a challenging task now that Davies will be absent from the left-back position.
Upamecano is injured too
Upamecano played the full 120 minutes as France triumphed over Croatia in the quarter-final of the UEFA Nations League at the Stade de France on Sunday night.
He even scored the decisive penalty to secure France’s advancement to the final four, set to take place this summer.
However, Upamecano has now suffered a setback. Upon his return from international duty, it has been revealed that he is set for a period on the sidelines.
Bayern Munich has confirmed that the center-back has loose joints in his left knee, which will require treatment and a period of recovery.
The gap to reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen is already down to six points, as a result of recent indifferent form from Bayern.
They do, however, remain strong candidates to win the Champions League and are many people’s favorites to overcome their two-legged quarter-final tie with Inter.
