Arsenal Close To Sealing Deal For Sporting CP Striker Viktor Gyökeres
Arsenal and Sporting CP are close to reaching a full agreement for Viktor Gyokeres’s transfer.
The proposed deal is valued at €63.5 million (£54.8 million; $74.2 million) plus an additional €10 million (£8.6 million; $11.7 million) in potential future bonuses.
However, disagreements over the details and feasibility of the contingency payments have caused a delay in finalizing the transfer.
Talks to resolve that are now at an extremely advanced stage, with a conclusion imminent. Only finishing touches and some minor tweaks are required before the switch can be completed.
Gyokeres was focused only on joining Arsenal and, despite late interest from elsewhere, he did not consider any other team.
The 27-year-old Swedish international’s agent agreed to waive his commission to support the transfer, and a contract until June 2030 has been drafted.
On July 12, Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas announced that Gyokeres would face a heavy fine and be required to apologize to his teammates.
This disciplinary action followed Gyokeres’ missing the pre-season training deadline amid Arsenal’s interest in the player.
Gyokeres has been one of Europe’s most in-demand strikers this summer, after netting 54 goals in 52 matches for Sporting last season. He was considered Arsenal’s preferred target for the centre-forward role.
During the 2024-25 season, Arsenal struggled for a consistent No. 9 due to injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Despite their efforts, they finished second in the Premier League for the third straight year, ending ten points behind champions Liverpool and scoring 17 fewer goals.
Gyokeres transferred from Brighton & Hove Albion to Coventry City for approximately £1 million in 2021, quickly establishing himself as a key player for the Championship club. In 2023, he made a €17 million move to Sporting CP, where he scored 97 goals and provided 28 assists.
His contributions helped Sporting secure consecutive league titles and win the Taça de Portugal last season.
Arsenal have been active in their first summer transfer window led by new sporting director Andrea Berta.
Midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard have transferred from Real Sociedad and Brentford, respectively. Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and winger Noni Madueke have arrived from Chelsea.
Additionally, Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera is expected to join his new teammates in Singapore after completing his move from Spain.
Gyokeres made his Sweden debut aged 20 and has played 26 games at international level, scoring 15 goals.
