‎AS Roma announced on Friday that Gian Piero Gasperini, the former Atalanta coach, has been appointed as the club’s new manager.

‎The 67-year-old has signed a three-year contract.

‎Gasperini departed from Atalanta on Saturday after nine years as their head coach and will take over from retired Claudio Ranieri at Roma.

‎Last season, Roma finished fifth in the league, earning a spot in the Europa League a competition Gasperini previously won with his former club.

‎Last season, Claudio Ranieri became Roma’s third managerial appointment when the 73-year-old came out of retirement to return for his third tenure at the club.

‎This is the same club where he began his playing career, and he now holds an advisory role.

‎Gasperini announced in February that he would not be signing a new deal at Atalanta, with his contract ending in June and while there was an option to extend it by a year, he decided the time was right to move on.

‎”Gasperini’s career is defined by its creative tactics, dedication to hard work, and exceptional player development,” a Roma club statement said.

‎”Both ownership and Claudio Ranieri believe Gasperini is the right man for the mission.”

‎Gasperini helped transform Atalanta from Serie A strugglers into regular European contenders. In 2024, he led them to their first-ever European trophy by winning the Europa League.

‎This achievement also marked his first major trophy in a managerial career that began in 2003.

‎Gasperini started his coaching career at Crotone and has also managed Genoa, Inter Milan, and Palermo.

‎However, he gained prominence at Atalanta, guiding them to European qualification in his first season after a 26-year absence from the club.

‎Last season, Atalanta topped the Serie A standings in December and remained contenders in the title race for much of the season, ultimately finishing third for the fourth time under Gasperini.

‎Roma secured the Conference League title in 2022 and reached the Europa League final the following year.

‎They now aim to have Gasperini lead them back to Champions League football for the first time since 2019.
