Atletico Madrid Agrees Deal To Sign Julian Alvarez From Manchester City
Atletico Madrid have reached an agreement with Manchester City over the transfer of Julian Alvarez, a report has claimed.
The Argentine is in line to become City’s record sale, with a fee of £81.5m (€95m) including add-ons agreed with Atletico.
The Athletic, which initially reported on Monday about the advanced negotiations between Atletico and City, now states that the two clubs have reached an agreement.
Alvarez is set to discuss personal terms regarding a transfer to the Estadio Metropolitano, and it is anticipated that he will approve the move. The 24-year-old has recently expressed his longing for more playing time, even though he has featured in 103 matches for City over the past two seasons, netting 36 goals.
City signed Alvarez from River Plate in 2022 for only £14m and stand to make nearly six times that amount back if all add-ons are met.
Earlier this week, it was widely reported that Atletico Madrid has reconsidered their decision to sell young striker, Samu Omorodion to Chelsea for approximately £34.4 million. This shift in stance enables Atletico to aggressively pursue their interest in Alvarez. Atletico had previously rejected a £27.4 million offer from Chelsea for the 20-year-old back in June, but that deal is now back on the table and may soon be finalized.
Meanwhile, Atletico are closing in on the signing of Chelsea midfielder, Conor Gallagher, who is expected to travel to Spain for a medical shortly after giving his approval to a move.
Gallagher has one year left to run on his Blues deal and will join the Spanish side for £34.2m. Atletico have already spend £29.6m on Real Sociedad centre-back, Robin Le Normand, and £27.5m on Villarreal striker, Alexander Sorloth.
The previous record sale for the club was the £55 million received from Ferran Torres’ transfer to Barcelona. Pep Guardiola has indicated that new signings will only be pursued if a player departs.
Given the limited minutes Julián Álvarez played last season, it’s likely that Manchester City will look to strengthen their squad in the transfer market. So far, their only senior signing this summer has been forward, Savinho from Troyes.
Álvarez is resting after a busy summer during which he won the Copa América before helping Argentina reach the quarter-finals of the Olympics, where they lost to France.
