Ralf Rangnick’s Austria secured a crucial 3-1 victory against their Group D counterparts, Poland, at Berlin.

The win marked Austria’s first triumph in the tournament and extended their impressive record to eight unbeaten outings from their last nine.

The game started on a positive note for Austria as they displayed early dominance and were rewarded with the opening goal. Gernot Trauner’s glancing header sailed beyond Wojciech Szczęsny into the top corner of the Poland net, having been picked out by Phil Mwene.

However, Poland fought back and managed to equalize midway through the first half after a period of sustained pressure. Krzysztof Piątek capitalized on a bouncing ball inside the penalty area to bring Poland level, showing his scoring ability once again.

Stunned by Poland’s equalizer, Austria struggled to find their rhythm in the second half. However, the quality within Austria shone through as Christoph Baumgartner restored their lead just after the hour mark with a clinical finish, deceiving Szczęsny in the process.

Austria further solidified their victory with a penalty kick late in the game, after a surging run from Marcel Sabitzer drew a foul from Szczęsny. Marko Arnautović stepped up and confidently converted the penalty, sealing the win for Austria and keeping their hopes of progression alive.

The result marked a crucial victory for Austria and also left Poland’s hopes in danger as they failed to capitalize on their earlier equalizer.
