Barcelona Confirms Frenkie de Jong Sidelined With Groin Injury After Netherlands Duty
FC Barcelona reported that Frenkie de Jong sustained a minor groin injury during the FIFA World Cup qualifier between the Netherlands and Poland last Thursday.
De Jong was substituted in the 83rd minute of the 1-1 draw with Poland and later withdrew from the upcoming qualifier against Lithuania due to an undisclosed injury.
On Monday, FC Barcelona announced that the former Ajax star suffered a slight groin injury against Poland.
FC Barcelona has not specified how long De Jong will be sidelined, but indications point to a brief absence.
Ahead of Sunday’s match with Lithuania, Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman explained the situation regarding the midfielder.
”Frenkie told us that he felt a sprain in the buttock area, so we decided not to take any risks. He has not yet recovered enough to be available to play,” Koeman said.
”We don’t think it is something serious, but letting him play would have been too risky.”
FC Barcelona hosts Valencia on Sunday for their first La Liga match after the international break.
Following that, they travel to Newcastle United for their opening UEFA Champions League fixture on Thursday, September 18.
