Barcelona Secures Dramatic Comeback Victory Against Celta Vigo
FC Barcelona demonstrated their tenacity and fighting spirit by staging a stunning comeback against RC Celta de Vigo at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, clinching a 4-3 victory thanks to a last-minute penalty hit by Raphinha.
First Half Action
Barcelona faced a Celta side that had historically posed challenges in recent encounters. Earlier this season, the Catalans were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw after squandering a two-goal lead.
Nevertheless, the home team entered the match buoyed by their strong head-to-head history against Celta and the emotional support of passionate fans in Catalonia.
The first half began positively for Barcelona as Ferran Torres opened the scoring in the 21st minute. After a commendable buildup that had seen Robert Lewandowski and Iñigo Martínez come close to scoring, Torres capitalized on a misjudged challenge from Marcos Alonso, rounding him expertly before curling a beautiful right-footed shot into the far corner.
However, just three minutes later, disaster struck for the hosts. Celta, eager to capitalize on any defensive lapses, caught Barcelona cold on the counterattack. A sweeping cross from Pablo Durán went awry for goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, who misjudged the flight of the ball, allowing Borja Iglesias to tap it into the empty net, equalizing for Celta in what seemed a harsh way for Barcelona.
As the half progressed, Barcelona struggled to find their rhythm. Their inability to convert chances into goals left fans anxious as Celta increasingly threatened. With key opportunities, including double saves against Ilaix Moriba and Iker Losada, Szczęsny had to be at his best to keep the scores level.
While Celta had their chances, both teams went into the break with the score tied at 1-1.
Celta Takes Control
The second half saw a reshuffled Celta side, providing them with renewed vigor. Barcelona’s defense looked shaky, allowing Celta to exploit gaps.
When Frenkie de Jong failed to intercept an ambitious ball from Yoel Lago, Iglesias showcased his speed and precision, racing behind the defense to score his second of the evening in the 54th minute.
Just minutes later, Celta was riding high after Iglesias completed his hat trick, exploiting another defensive mishap. This time, Szczęsny was unable to stop the former Betis man from sliding the ball past him to make it 3-1, leaving Barcelona fans in disbelief.
It seemed that Barcelona’s title hopes were at risk as they found themselves two goals down.
However, true to their reputation as the top scorers in La Liga, the hosts began to respond. Raphinha sparked a revival, first assisting Dani Olmo, who calmly slotted the ball across goal to reduce the deficit. Shortly after, Raphinha showed his aerial prowess by heading in a superb cross from teenager Lamine Yamal, leveling the match at 3-3 and igniting hopes of a comeback.
Super Comeback
Just when it seemed like a draw was inevitable, a late twist occurred in the 98th minute. Lago brought down Olmo in the penalty area, prompting a VAR review.
The tension in the stadium was palpable as Raphinha stepped up to take the crucial penalty. With confidence and composure, he beat goalkeeper Vicente Guaita from 12 yards out sealing a remarkable 4-3 victory for Barcelona.
In a game that exemplified the unpredictable nature of football, Borja Iglesias’s hat-trick went in vain as Celta Vigo were unable to secure a point, leaving them with pressing concerns about their ambitions for a European berth following a promising start to the season.
Looking Forward
As they celebrate this win, Barcelona increases their lead over rivals Real Madrid to seven points, maintaining a strong grip on La Liga as they prepare for a challenging run-in that includes the much-anticipated El Clásico in May.
