Barcelona’s Teenage Gem Set To Sign New Contract

Barcelona aims to solidify the foundation of its youthful squad for the future, and the next player poised to sign a contract extension is promising defender Pau Cubarsi.

The 18-year-old talent has been part of the senior team for just over a year but has rapidly established himself as a key starter in the defense.

His remarkable performance and potential highlight Barcelona’s commitment to nurturing young talent and securing their next generation of stars.

The teenage defender made his debut under Xavi Hernandez last January as a 17-year-old and, in the subsequent months, was quickly handed a contract extension until 2027.

Considering his contract was set to expire in 2026, Barcelona was eager to secure additional time for negotiations regarding a longer deal with Cubarsi.

This urgency stemmed from Manchester City’s prior interest, as the Premier League club had already made an offer for him the previous summer while he was still competing as an under-19 player.

According to Jose Alvarez of El Chiringuito, Barcelona will on Thursday sign a new three-year contract with Cubarsi, extending his deal until 2030.

The 18-year-old defender will be tied to the club until he is 23 under the fresh deal. Cubarsi’s deal will follow from renewals for Gerard Martin, Pedri, Gavi, and Ronald Araujo.

Cubarsi appears to have secured a spot in Barcelona’s starting XI for years to come, provided he continues to perform at a high level and avoids injuries. Under the management of both Xavi and Hansi Flick, he has consistently been a reliable starter for the club, handling pressure on the biggest stages with remarkable composure.

Additionally, he has been a regular in the Spain national team, recently contributing to their success by winning an Olympic gold medal with La Roja this past summer.

Arguably the subject of most intrigue is who will accompany him in the centre of Barcelona’s defence in the coming years.

Cubarsi has formed a strong partnership with Inigo Martinez, who is set to continue next season, but long-term is unlikely to continue as a starter.
