Champions League Roundup: Premier League Clubs Surge Ahead As League Phase Reaches Breaking Point
The Champions League league phase is heading toward a thrilling conclusion, and Premier League clubs are leading the charge.
With five English teams currently sitting inside the top eight automatic qualification spots, England’s dominance in Europe has rarely looked stronger.
Arsenal have already booked their place in the round of 16, while Liverpool, Newcastle, and Chelsea all secured crucial victories to strengthen their positions. Tottenham also remains in contention, leaving Manchester City as the only English side sitting in the playoff zone ahead of the final round of fixtures.
Yet despite the strong English presence, the league table is incredibly tight.
Only three points separate third-place Real Madrid from 15th-place Juventus, meaning almost every match on the final day carries knockout-level importance. As the Champions League moves into its decisive week, the drama is set to reach new heights.
English Teams Drive the Momentum
Arsenal continue to set the pace, having already secured their spot in the next round. Liverpool sits comfortably in fourth after a commanding 3–0 victory at Marseille.
Virgil van Dijk was quick to stress that nothing has been won yet, saying, “Let’s make sure we’re in the top eight. We’ve put ourselves in a good position, but that’s for next week.”
Newcastle enjoyed a similarly emphatic night with a 3–0 win over PSV Eindhoven, giving their supporters renewed optimism heading into the final fixtures.
Chelsea, meanwhile, edged past a resilient Pafos side thanks to a Moisés Caicedo header that broke the deadlock. With Tottenham still inside the top eight and Manchester City fighting to climb out of the playoff spots, the Premier League remains the most represented league near the top of the standings.
Final Day Drama Looms Large
With six automatic qualification spots still undecided, the stakes for the final round could not be higher.
Although Arsenal and Bayern Munich have already secured their berths in the round of 16, teams all the way down to the lower half of the table remain in contention. Just two points separate the final playoff spot from Ajax, who sit 32nd, highlighting how volatile this new Champions League format has become.
One of the standout fixtures sees Italian champions Napoli host Chelsea.
Napoli sit 25th, just one place outside the playoff zone, meaning defeat would likely eliminate them from the competition altogether. Adding intrigue is the reunion between Napoli manager Antonio Conte and his former club.
Chelsea coach Liam Rosenior framed the stakes clearly, “They need to win to stay in the competition; we need to win to be in the top eight.”
Elsewhere, defending champions Paris Saint-Germain face Newcastle in another decisive fixture.
Any dropped points could force either side into the dangerous playoff path. Manchester City’s meeting with Galatasaray also carries major implications as the 2023 European champions attempt to avoid an unexpected detour through the playoffs.
Even further down the table, José Mourinho’s Benfica must win away at Real Madrid to have any chance of sneaking into the playoffs, setting up one of the most anticipated clashes of the round.
Premier League Power on Display
Liverpool were last season’s top finisher in the league phase, though they later fell to PSG in the round of 16.
This year, they’ve had to grind out results, but their victory in Marseille was a statement of intent. Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring with a well-struck free kick, followed by a Gerónimo Rulli own goal and a composed finish from Cody Gakpo.
Chance creation was plentiful, with Hugo Ekitike rattling the crossbar and Mohamed Salah missing a rare open opportunity.
Newcastle’s win over PSV was even more convincing. Yoane Wissa, Anthony Gordon, and Harvey Barnes all found the net as Eddie Howe’s side cruised to a vital three points.
Chelsea struggled to unlock Pafos but ultimately prevailed through Caicedo’s decisive header, keeping their Champions League hopes firmly on track.
Kane Extends His Remarkable Season
Harry Kane’s extraordinary season continued with goals number 35 and 36 in Bayern Munich’s win over Union Saint-Gilloise.
The England captain scored twice within three minutes first with a powerful near-post header, then from the penalty spot after winning the foul himself. His afternoon might have been even better had his second penalty not struck the crossbar, denying him what would have been a fourth hat-trick of the campaign.
Still, his brace helped Bayern clinch a round-of-16 place alongside Arsenal.
Fermin López Leads Barcelona Fightback
Barcelona secured a crucial away win at Slavia Prague, pulling themselves up to ninth in the standings just outside the automatic qualification zone.
Fermin López was the star of the night, scoring twice, including a spectacular long-range effort that swung the momentum firmly in Barça’s favour.
Barcelona initially fell behind to an early Vasil Kusej goal, but López struck twice to give them control.
Robert Lewandowski’s own goal levelled the match before halftime, but substitute Dani Olmo curled in a brilliant finish to restore the lead. Lewandowski then completed the scoring late on, giving Barcelona a much-needed 4–2 victory.
McKennie and Juventus Stay Alive
Weston McKennie continued his strong Champions League campaign with another goal in Juventus’ 2–0 victory over Benfica.
It was his third strike of the competition, helping Juve cement their place in at least the playoff round. The Italian side sits 15th, but with the standings so tight, an automatic place is not beyond reach if results go their way.
Atalanta slipped after a 3–2 defeat at home to Athletic Bilbao, who remain in the playoff battle themselves.
The Tournament’s Unlikely Heroes
One of the most captivating stories of this Champions League campaign belongs to Qarabag. The Azerbaijani club recorded its third win of the league phase by defeating Eintracht Frankfurt 3–2 with a stunning late comeback.
Bahlul Mustafazade scored the winning goal deep into stoppage time, sparking wild celebrations and eliminating Frankfurt from the competition.
The match was chaotic from the start. Camilo Duran put Qarabag ahead early, but Frankfurt responded through Can Uzun and Fares Chaibi. Qarabag pushed until Duran equalised in the 80th minute, setting up Mustafazade’s dramatic 94th-minute finish.
Elsewhere, Atlético Madrid were denied victory after a Marcos Llorente own goal resulted in a 1–1 draw against Galatasaray.
Giuliano Simeone had given Atlético the lead, but the unfortunate deflection cost them all three points.
