Champions League: Scholes Knocks Varane After Man United’s Chaotic Defeat To Galatasaray
Following Manchester United’s sad 3-2 Champions League loss to Galatasaray on Tuesday Day evening, Paul Scholes didn’t hold back in his angry post-game analysis, criticizing the defense, particularly Raphael Varane.
Scholes’ Harsh Assessment
The defense for the Red Devils was in shambles. Worry about Varane’s performance. A resurgent Galatasaray stunned Manchester United by coming from behind not once, but twice to win a surprise victory at Old Trafford. It was a night to forget for the Red Devils. Erik ten Hag’s club will now have a difficult time competing in the Champions League, and Scholes was blunt in his evaluation of the performance.
“Disappointed. I didn’t believe Manchester United performed all that poorly, but prior to the game, everyone was complaining about the team’s inability to score. We neglected the defensive aspect of the game, Scholes told TNT Sports. They were dispersed throughout, therefore it is not good enough.
Varane in particular created a tremendous deal of concern for the former United midfielder. The World Cup champion defender has dealt with a number of injuries while playing at Old Trafford and has struggled to make an impact in his position.
“Varane has me a bit worried… His legs appear a little slow, and I think he can’t keep fit. For him, I’m worried,” Scholes continued.
Another United legend, Rio Ferdinand, didn’t hold back either. He criticized the squad for giving up goals immediately after scoring and listed the costly errors that contributed to their demise, such as Andre Onana’s error that gave the ball to Dries Martens and ultimately led to a foul by Casemiro and a red card.
Galatasaray deserves praise for making use of their opportunities to punish Manchester United, according to the former Red Devils defender. “We saw promise and reasons to be positive one minute, and the next, I found myself holding my head in my hands. This team lacks organization, which is embarrassing. This is the Champions League, and as we saw tonight, a lack of spatial and danger awareness contributed to our demise.
