Chelsea Signs Goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen From Villarreal
Chelsea has announced the signing of Danish under-21 goalkeeper, Filip Jörgensen from La Liga club Villarreal, confirmed the Premier League side on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old, who last season became Villarreal’s No. 1 keeper, has signed a seven-year deal, Chelsea said.
The clubs did not disclose the transfer fee but British media reported the deal was worth around £20 million ($25.67m).
Jorgensen will compete for the starting goalkeeper position at Chelsea alongside Djordje Petrović and Robert Sánchez, both of whom joined the club last summer. Under new head coach Enzo Maresca, Jörgensen is expected to fit into a style that emphasizes a goalkeeper’s ability to confidently play out from the back, which Maresca sees as vital for his approach in West London.
“This move is a dream come true,” Jörgensen told club media.
“I am very excited to have signed for Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in the world. I can’t wait to get to know everyone and to start playing with all my new teammates.”
Jörgensen career path
Born in Sweden to a Danish father and Swedish mother, Jörgensen represented Sweden at youth levels before making a switch to Denmark in May 2021.
He made 44 senior appearances in all competitions for Villarreal after joining from Spanish rivals Real Mallorca in 2017, and he made his La Liga debut in January 2023.
Jorgensen also has six caps for Denmark’s U21s after switching his international allegiance from Sweden, whom he represented up to U17 level.
Chelsea successfully overcame rival interest from Marseille to secure the signing of the 22-year-old, who becomes their seventh signing of the summer transfer window.
This follows the earlier arrivals of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tosin Adarabioyo, Omari Kellyman, Marc Guiu, Caleb Wiley, and Renato Veiga.
The Blues are also set to welcome Argentine defender, Aron Anselmino in a £17m deal with Boca Juniors, who will likely keep the player on loan for the season ahead.
