‎Sheffield Wednesday has submitted a notice to appoint an administrator, according to court records.

‎The filing was made at 10:01 a.m. on Friday with a specialist company’s court.

‎The club’s financial troubles under owner Dejphon Chansiri have been widely reported, with indications that a winding-up order from HMRC could be imminent.

‎Now, a notice to appoint an administrator has been filed at the Insolvency and Companies Court, which is a specialist court within the High Court.

‎Wednesday did not make any immediate comment but is expected to release a statement in due course. Under EFL rules, the club would face a 12-point penalty for entering administration.

‎That would leave Wednesday, who sit bottom of the Championship, on minus six points.

‎The EFL said in August it was deeply concerned about the club’s finances. Manager Danny Röhl and several key players departed in the summer, and the club’s season began on Wednesday with only 15 first-team players.

‎Many Wednesday fans boycotted the home Carabao Cup clash with Leeds in protest against owner Dejphon Chansiri, who took over from Milan Mandaric in 2015. Thousands also stayed away from their recent home game against Middlesbrough in a continued show of discontent.

‎Chansiri has said he is willing to sell but has dismissed at least two bids because they have not matched his asking price.

‎Wednesday won promotion to the Championship in 2023 and faces an uphill battle to avoid dropping back into the third tier.

‎The club has faced multiple EFL embargoes this year over tax debts and for failing to pay players and staff on time on five occasions, including September.

‎In the 2020-21 season, Wednesday were deducted six points for breaching the EFL’s profitability and sustainability rules, which contributed to their relegation to League One.
