The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has decided to appoint former Nigeria U17 and U20 coach, Emmanuel Amunike, as the new head coach of the senior national team, the Super Eagles. This decision comes after a thorough screening process by the technical committee, which saw Amunike emerge as the preferred choice for the job.

Emmanuel Amunike, a former Zamalek and Sporting Lisbon winger, has had a successful coaching career so far. He notably led the Nigeria U17 national team to victory in the FIFA U17 World Cup and guided the Tanzanian national team to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations after a long absence. However, his time with Egypt’s Misr Lel Makkasa and Zambia’s Zanaco were less successful, and he faced challenges while coaching the Nigeria U20 team.

Despite these ups and downs in his coaching career, Amunike’s experience and track record with youth teams makes him a suitable candidate to lead the Super Eagles. His appointment signals a shift towards nurturing local coaching talent and allowing former players to contribute to the development of Nigerian football.

The decision to appoint Amunike over foreign coaches like Michael Nsien, Domenec Torrent, and Danny Bruijs shows the NFF’s commitment to supporting homegrown talent and providing opportunities for Nigerian coaches to lead the national team. This move is likely to be well-received by fans and stakeholders who have been calling for a more indigenous approach to coaching the Super Eagles.

With the support of assistant coach Finidi George and potential additions like Michael Nsien and Emeka Amadi, Amunike will have a strong technical team to work with as he takes on the challenge of leading one of Africa’s most successful football teams. His experience in international competitions and knowledge of Nigerian football make him well-equipped to guide the Super Eagles to future success.
