Liverpool has confirmed the appointment of former Dutch international defender John Heitinga as the club’s newest coaching staff member.

Arne Slot, the 45-year-old Dutchman who assumed the role of Liverpool’s manager on June 1, has swiftly assembled his assistants. Among his latest additions is John Heitinga, a name that has already sparked considerable interest.

John Heitinga, a 40-year-old defender famously sent off in the 2010 World Cup Final against Spain, began his career at Ajax in the Netherlands.

He later moved to Atletico Madrid in 2008, where he stayed for a year before joining Everton in the Premier League.

David Moyes, the former Everton manager, brought him to the club, where he quickly became a beloved figure among Everton supporters.

He spent six years at Goodison Park, enjoying several intense matches against local rivals Liverpool, before moving on to Fulham.

Heitinga’s tenure at Fulham was short-lived, and he returned to Ajax briefly before embarking on a coaching career.

He started working with various youth teams at Ajax and eventually took over the senior team from January 2023 to the end of that season.

In a recent development, Heitinga has rejoined his former manager at Everton, David Moyes, who appointed him as the first-team assistant coach at West Ham United.

With his return to Liverpool, Heitinga is set to bring his unique experience and expertise to the team, aiming to overcome past rivalries and contribute to the club’s success.

Liverpool has also made significant additions to its coaching staff.

Sipke Hulshoff has been appointed as the first assistant coach, Ruben Peeters as the lead physical performance coach at Anfield, and Fabian Otte as the head of first-team goalkeeper coaching, each bringing their unique expertise to their respective roles.

These new appointments to Liverpool’s coaching staff are not just changes in personnel, but strategic moves that are expected to significantly influence the team’s strategy and performance in the upcoming season.
