Finidi George Lands New Job After Resigning As Super Eagles Head Coach
Finidi George, the immediate former coach of the Super Eagles, has recently taken on a new role as the manager of the Nigeria Premier Football League team, Rivers United.
This comes shortly after Finidi George confirmed his resignation as the head coach of Nigeria’s men’s senior national team.
SportXparte reports that George was announced as the new head coach of the 2022 NPFL champions on Wednesday, with an official unveiling scheduled for Thursday.
In a statement on Wednesday, Rivers United expressed their pleasure in appointing Finidi George as their new Technical Manager, highlighting his wealth of experience and expertise from his distinguished playing career of over fifteen years.
The statement reads, “His impressive credentials include winning the Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles in 1994, the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995, and the Nigeria Premier Football League with Enyimba International FC in 2023.
“As a coach, Finidi has demonstrated his ability to lead teams to success, and we are confident that he will bring his expertise and passion to our club. We are excited to have him on board and look forward to a successful tenure under his leadership.”
Finidi George’s Resignation As Super Eagle Coach
Finidi stepped down from his position as the head coach of the Super Eagles in June following two matches in charge.
This decision came after the team’s underwhelming performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic, prompting the Nigeria Football Federation to bring in a foreign technical adviser for the team.
Prior to his role with the Super Eagles, Finidi spent two full seasons and was close to completing a third with Enyimba, leading them to their record-ninth NPFL title in 2023.
At Rivers United, he assumes the leadership position after head coach Evans Ogenyi, who led the club until the end of the previous season following the dismissal of long-serving Stanley Eguma.
Originally from Port Harcourt, the 53-year-old began his career with Calabar Rovers, Iwanyanwu Nationale, and played for local club Sharks FC – which merged with Dolphins in 2016 to form Rivers United – for two seasons before embarking on a successful European career.
