Flamengo Forward Gabriel Barbosa Cleared By Cas To Play Pending Appeal On Doping Case
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced on Tuesday that Flamengo forward Gabriel Barbosa, also known as Gabigol, has been allowed to continue playing while he appeals his ban for breaking anti-doping regulations.
In March, a Brazilian sports court handed him a two-year suspension for attempting to commit anti-doping fraud. The ban started from the date of the violation, which was April 8, 2023.
The forward denied the accusations and his club pledged to support him in his appeal to CAS. A date for the appeal has not yet been scheduled.
“The Panel of arbitrators in charge of the matter CAS 2024/A/10473 Gabriel Barbosa Almeida v. Uniao & ABCD has issued an Order granting the request to stay the execution of the challenged decision filed by Gabriel Barbosa Almeida,” the CAS statement said.
Since receiving the ban, Barbosa has been absent for nine games, including Flamengo’s three Copa Libertadores matches. Their upcoming match is a third-round Copa do Brasil fixture against Amazonas on Wednesday.
