Haaland And Reijnders Shine As Manchester City Ease Past Wolves
Manchester City began their 2025/26 Premier League campaign emphatically, sweeping aside Wolverhampton Wanderers with a commanding 4-0 victory at Molineux.
A Slow Start Before the Storm
The opening exchanges saw Wolves pressing with intent, looking to unsettle the champions.
The first real chance fell, unsurprisingly, to Erling Haaland, who headed over from close range after finding space in the box. Wolves briefly thought they had taken the lead when Marshall Munetsi’s header found the net, but celebrations were cut short by the offside flag.
Then came the City surge quick, clinical, and devastating. Against the run of play, Haaland opened the scoring by tapping home Rico Lewis’s low cross for his first goal of the season.
Moments later, debutant Tijjani Reijnders doubled the lead with a composed first-time finish into the bottom corner after Oscar Bobb’s clever pass on the counter.
Interestingly, last season at AC Milan, Reijnders had a remarkable record; his team won 10 of the 13 competitive games in which he scored, a good omen for City fans.
Wolves Fight, But City Kill the Game
To their credit, Wolves emerged from the break with renewed purpose. Jørgen Strand Larsen tested the champions with a stinging effort into the side-netting before forcing new City goalkeeper James Trafford into a superb fingertip save.
However, any hopes of a Wolves fightback were extinguished just past the hour mark. Reijnders, already making himself a fan favourite, turned provider with a perfectly weighted cutback for Haaland to calmly side-foot into the net.
That goal took the Norwegian’s tally to 10 Premier League goals against Wolves in just 11 appearances more than he has managed against any other opponent.
City weren’t done. Another summer recruit, Rayan Cherki, capped off a dream debut by curling a precise finish into the bottom corner, sealing a 4-0 rout and giving Guardiola plenty to smile about.
August Woes for Wolves, Bright Start for City
For Wolves, the defeat continues a long-standing jinx in August they have now managed just one win in their last 21 league matches played in the month.
Despite promising spells, Gary O’Neil’s men lacked the cutting edge to truly trouble the champions.
City, on the other hand, claimed their tenth win in 11 Premier League meetings with Wolves and also immediately took top spot in the early league standings.
