Hansi Flick Reacts After Barcelona’s Collapse Vs Atlético Madrid

‎In a stunning and bruising night at the Metropolitano, FC Barcelona suffered a heavy 4–0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal.

‎Coach Hansi Flick did not sugar-coat the disaster, admitting that his team was “taught a lesson” after a first half in which everything unravelled.

‎All four goals came before the break a nightmare opening that included an own goal and a series of clinical strikes from Antoine Griezmann, Ademola Lookman, and Julián Álvarez.

‎With the second leg scheduled for March 3 at Spotify Camp Nou, Barça face a huge mountain to climb.

‎A Nightmare First Half

‎The tone of the evening shifted dramatically in the opening minutes.

‎A simple back pass from Eric García slipped under the foot of goalkeeper Joan García, gifting Atlético early momentum and triggering a ruthless attacking wave.

‎Atlético took control. In the 14th minute, Griezmann finished off a sharp team move. In the 30th minute, Lookman netted his second goal for his new club.

‎In stoppage time (45+), Álvarez ended his 11-game goal drought by smashing in the fourth.

‎Barça defenders looked overwhelmed, gaps appeared everywhere, and Atlético’s intensity outmatched Flick’s men throughout the half.

Flick: “We Got a Lesson”

‎After the match, Flick was candid in his assessment.

‎”We didn’t play very well in the first half as a team. We had too much distance between everyone. We didn’t press how we wanted.”

‎”In the first 45 minutes or more, we got a lesson. Sometimes it’s good in the right moment. Maybe today was the right moment.”

‎”I am still proud of my team, maybe not today in the first 45 minutes, but across the whole season. When you see how many injuries we have all season, how we adapt…Today was a heavy loss but I am proud of my team.”

‎”We will come back. We need to start from the beginning [of games]. When you see Atlético players, they have more will, more hunger.

‎”And this is what I want from the first minute. We didn’t show that in the first half.”

‎”We have the second leg. We will fight for that. If we are able to win each half 2-0, this is our goal. We need our fans in Camp Nou and we will see what happens.”

‎VAR Controversy Adds Fuel to Flick’s Frustration

‎Barça showed signs of life after halftime and even thought they had pulled one back when Pau Cubarsí scored in the 51st minute. But following a seven-minute review, the goal was ruled out for offside a decision that left Flick fuming.

‎”What should I say?” Flick fumed.

‎”We start with yellow cards. Normally in the first action, with the foul on [Alejandro] Balde, it’s a yellow card, [for sure].

‎”And then everything is maybe different. But he invited them to play like this. So it’s totally different.

‎”[As for the disallowed goal], come on, for me it’s a mess. They have to wait seven minutes, oh come on. They find something in these seven minutes? OK.

‎”When I saw this situation, it was clear no offside. Maybe they could see something different. Then tell us. There’s no communication. It’s so bad here.”

More Misery for Eric García

‎The night went from bad to worse for García. After his early own goal, he received a red card late in the match for a last-man challenge on Álex Baena, making him the first Barça player since at least the 2004–05 season to both score an own goal and be sent off in the same match.

‎With ten men and ten minutes of stoppage time, Barça simply had to survive.

What’s Next for Barcelona?

‎The Catalan giants have already lifted the Spanish Super Cup this season and continue to fight in the UEFA Champions League, where they are preparing for the round of 16.

‎But this Copa del Rey tie has turned into an uphill battle. To reach the final where they would meet either Real Sociedad or Athletic Club Barça will need nothing short of a perfect night at Camp Nou.

‎Flick believes it’s possible. The players believe it’s possible.

‎But after a 4–0 loss in Madrid, belief alone will not be enough.
