Euro 2024: How Four Best Third-placed Teams Will Be Decided
Sportxparte reports that the Euro 2024 in Germany is well underway, with the group stage nearing its conclusion.
The tournament, which kicked off on June 14th, 2024, saw exciting matches and surprising results.
Despite a slight stumble, Host nation Germany currently sits atop Group A with 7 points. England, Denmark, and France also look strong in their respective groups.
The knockout stages are set to begin on June 29th, with some intriguing potential matchups already brewing.
One confirmed clash is Germany facing the runner-up of Group C, which could be England if they progress.
With several top teams still in contention, the race for the championship is wide open.
The upcoming knockout rounds promise high-stakes matches and plenty of drama for football fans worldwide.
It is worth noting that in the UEFA EURO 2024 tournament, only the highest-ranked teams in every group secure a spot in the round of 16.
However, only the four teams with the highest third-place finishes can move forward. This is the current situation.
The four best third-placed teams will be decided based on the below categories:
- A higher number of points
- Superior goal difference
- Higher number of goals scored.
- Higher number of wins
- Lower disciplinary points total based only on yellow and red cards received in all group matches (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, expulsion for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points)
- Position in the overall European Qualifiers rankings, or if Germany, the host association team, is involved in the comparison, drawing of lots
After identifying the four top third-placed teams, article 21.05 of the rules outlines the sequence of tie-play among them. The assignment of teams to the rounds of 16 can only occur once the identities of all four teams are established.
