How PSV Eindhoven Won The 2024/25 Eredivisie Title
PSV Eindhoven has secured their 26th Eredivisie title after an unforgettable and turbulent season.
The 2024/25 Eredivisie campaign was full of excitement: suspense, drama, comebacks, a closely contested race, and an incredible climax.
To commemorate PSV’s thrilling victory, Sportxparte highlights key moments that defined their remarkable season.
PSV’s Stellar Start to the 2024/25 Season
After dominating the 2023/24 Eredivisie season, PSV were looking to go back-to-back as champions for the fourth time this century.
A blistering start to the 2024/25 season helped a bunch. PSV won the first ten games of the season, a streak that included 5-1, 7-1, and 60 wins over RKC Waalwijk, Almere City, and PEC Zwolle.
PSV’s perfect start saw them score 35 goals, concede a mere six, and take a 7-point lead over Ajax at the top of the table.
However, it wasn’t the best start in Eredivisie history: PSV won the first 17 games in the 1987/88 and 2023/24 Eredivisie seasons.
PSV’s Four-Game Win Streak
After their first loss of the season to Ajax (3-2), PSV bounced back strongly with a fierce four-game winning streak.
They defeated NAC Breda, FC Groningen, FC Utrecht, and FC Twente by scores of 3-0, 5-0, 5-2, and 6-1. Notably, they scored five or more goals in three consecutive matches.
PSV Faces Challenge
Questions about PSV’s form emerged after a 1-0 defeat to Robin van Persie’s sc Heerenveen, a match PSV manager Peter Bosz described as the worst of his time at Eindhoven.
Fortunately, PSV needed to bounce back swiftly ahead of their next fixture against Feyenoord in Eindhoven.
The Rotterdam club had shown signs of improvement after an early season struggle, impressing with a 3-3 draw against Manchester City and a 4-2 Champions League victory over Sparta Prague.
The reigning champions paid no mind to the external criticism, delivering a commanding 3-0 victory over Feyenoord. This match was PSV’s final game before the winter break, which saw them enter with a 6-point lead.
By that point, PSV had netted an impressive 59 goals in just 17 games, averaging nearly 3.5 goals per match in the first half of the Eredivisie season.
The Ultimate Comeback
A disastrous start to 2025 saw PSV lose their lead over Ajax after a 2-0 home defeat. With seven games remaining, Ajax held a nine-point advantage at the top of the table.
They looked set to clinch a record-extending 37th league title.
But a collapse from Ajax, who failed to beat FC Utrecht (4-0 loss) and Sparta Rotterdam (1-1), saw PSV close the gap to four points before a crucial clash with Feyenoord, the most in-form team in the country at the time.
Robin van Persie’s Feyenoord appeared to shake PSV’s season again, taking a 2-0 lead after ten minutes.
However, PSV staged an incredible second-half comeback to spark their title chase. Noa Lang scored the equalizer in the 72nd minute and netted a dramatic winning goal in stoppage time in the 99th minute.
Just two hours after PSV’s thrilling victory, Ajax lost 3-0 to NEC Nijmegen, closing the gap to just one point.
The comeback of dreams
As Ajax faced difficulties in the final days of the season, PSV emerged as the favorites to clinch the Eredivisie title. After losing to NEC, Ajax dramatically drew with FC Groningen.
A victory over FC Twente prevented Ajax from ending the season on a five-game winless streak, but it also spoiled a large lead despite having a 99% chance of winning the league, according to Opta.
PSV defied expectations, dropping just three points in their final ten games of the season, with key victories over Heracles Almelo (4-1) and Sparta Rotterdam (3-1).
In just two months, their miraculous comeback turned a distant dream into reality, leading up to winning their 26th league title.
