The 2025/26 UCL: Quarter-Finals Set As The Road To Budapest Narrows
The 2025/26 UEFA Champions League campaign is entering its defining phase, with only eight teams still in the hunt for European football’s most prestigious prize.
From the revamped league-phase format to the intense knockout battles already witnessed, the competition has delivered drama at every turn.
Here is a comprehensive look at who remains, how we got here, and what lies ahead on the road to the final in Budapest.
The Champions League Draws: How the Field Took Shape
This season’s competition began with the new 36-team league-phase structure. The draw was conducted on August 28th in Monaco, with the clubs distributed across four seeded pots.
Reigning champions PSG were placed automatically in Pot 1, with the remaining seeds determined by UEFA coefficients.
Each of the 36 teams was matched against eight opponents two from each pot in a model blending manual selection and automated scheduling.
Clubs were protected from drawing teams from the same association (with a maximum limit of two opponents per association), ensuring broad diversity across fixtures.
Once the league phase concluded, finishing positions determined the path forward:
1st–8th: Direct qualification to the Round of 16
9th–24th: Knockout play-offs
25th–36th: Eliminated
The knockout play-off draw took place on January 30th, followed by the final knockout draw on February 27th, which set the Round of 16 and all remaining brackets.
