SportXparte reports that the leading goal scorer in the top tier of Spanish football is bestowed with a prestigious personal accolade by the renowned sports newspaper Marca. This esteemed prize, known as the Trofeo Pichichi, is not officially recognized by La Liga but holds great significance. It is named after the former Athletic Club striker Rafael ‘Pichichi’ Moreno, who excelled in the 1910s and 1920s.

Since the 1952-53 season, the Trofeo Pichichi has been presented annually to the top goal scorer, with all previous leading scorers retroactively acknowledged as Pichichi winners. The illustrious Barcelona legend Lionel Messi has claimed this esteemed award on numerous occasions, thanks to his exceptional performances at Camp Nou, earning him an unprecedented eight Golden Boots. Additionally, the esteemed Real Madrid icons Hugo Sanchez and Alfredo Di Stefano feature prominently on the list of other multiple winners.

Benzema was epic in the previous season. His performance was key to keeping his team on steam, with him scoring the major goals in the La Liga season. His goal numbers, however, put him behind Lewandowski in the season race.

The former Real Madrid star striker had run home with the Pichichi last season but lost the individual award to Lewandowski the following season.

Messi, Ronaldo, Benzema Dumps La Liga Top Goal Scorer Race

The trio of Messi, Ronaldo and Benzema, opted out of the La Liga top goal-scorer race last season following their latest separate deals outside Spain.

Ronaldo was the first to move out of Spain, and England, respectively, to sign a historic deal with Saudi Arabia’s professional club, Al Nassr.

The Portuguese striker was signed in an estimated deal worth 200 million Euros ($214.5m). Ronaldo’s contract was announced on December 30, 2022.

The Portuguese forward had left Manchester United a month before joining Al Nassr. The development happened following an explosive television interview in which the 37-year-old said he felt betrayed by the club and did not respect their Dutch manager Erik ten Hag.

“This is a signing that will not only inspire our club to achieve even greater success but inspire our league, our nation and future generations, boys and girls, to be the best version of themselves,” the club said in a tweet.

“I am fortunate that I have won everything I set out to win in European football and feel now that this is the right moment to share my experience in Asia,” Ronaldo said.

“I am looking forward to joining my new teammates and together with them help the Club to achieve success,” Ronaldo had said after joining the Saudi Pro League.
