Ligue 1 Roundup: Monaco Stuns PSG As Lens Moves To The Top Of The Table
Ligue 1 delivered one of its most dramatic weekends of the season, with Paris Saint-Germain suffering just its second defeat of the campaign, Marseille stumbling at home, and Lens moving into first place.
Monaco 1–0 PSG:
Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain arrived in Monaco looking to stabilise their position at the summit.
Instead, they left with a damaging 1-0 defeat their second of the season, matching their total losses from the entirety of last year.
The match was fiercely contested from the outset. Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara escaped with only a yellow card after a reckless lunge caught PSG goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier violently on the ankle.
Chevalier, however, recovered impressively and later produced a sharp one-handed save from Takumi Minamino’s volley.
But it was Minamino who eventually broke PSG’s resistance. In the 69th minute, the Japan international controlled Aleksandr Golovin’s pinpoint pass before delicately clipping the ball past Chevalier.
Monaco’s tactical discipline and threat on the counter repeatedly exposed PSG, whose midfield struggled to impose itself, especially Vitinha, fresh off a Champions League hat trick, but was contained superbly by the hosts.
The closing stages grew tense as Monaco defender Thilo Kehrer was sent off following a VAR review for shoving a PSG player in the back. Former Juventus star Paul Pogba made a late appearance for Monaco as they held firm to secure a huge victory.
PSG’s defeat opened the door for Marseille to temporarily leapfrog them, but as events unfolded, another team would seize the spotlight.
Lens Climb to the Top With a Win at Angers
Lens capitalized fully on PSG’s slip, moving to the top of Ligue 1 with a deserved 2-1 victory away at Angers.
Recalled France winger Florian Thauvin was the star of the show, scoring in both halves to guide Lens to their fourth consecutive league win.
Thauvin opened the scoring with a thunderous strike into the top corner just before halftime and doubled the lead in the 74th minute. Angers responded through Harouna Djibirin two minutes later, but Lens held on to secure their seventh win in eight matches an outstanding run interrupted only by a 2-0 defeat to Metz in October.
With one point now separating Lens and PSG, the title race has taken a sharp new turn.
Marseille Falter in Stoppage-Time Drama
Marseille had the chance to move top on Saturday night, but their hopes were dashed by a stoppage-time equaliser in a 2-2 draw against Toulouse.
Despite holding the advantage deep into added time, Marseille’s defensive lapse allowed Toulouse to escape with a point a costly outcome for the home side.
What could have been a statement victory instead became a frustrating missed opportunity that kept the league table tightly packed.
