Marseille have reached an agreement in principle with Roberto De Zerbi to take over as head coach, the Ligue 1 club said on Monday.

At the end of last season, De Zerbi departed Brighton following a successful two-year tenure, marked by their highest Premier League finish of sixth place and their first qualification for European competition.

In a statement, Marseille said they were “working with all parties involved to formalize the arrival of the Italian coach and his staff on the OM bench and to prepare for his arrival in Marseille in the coming days.”

Before joining Brighton, De Zerbi was rumored to be in the running for various Premier League positions, such as at Manchester United and Liverpool. His previous managerial roles also included time at Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine and Sassuolo in Italy.

Marseille’s 2023-24 season was turbulent, beginning the campaign under the stewardship of Spanish coach, Marcelino, before he resigned seven games into his tenure.

Former Italy midfielder, Gennaro Gattuso, replaced him at the helm in September 2023 only to be fired five months later.

Jean-Louis Gasset saw out the term as Marseille finished eighth, outside the European places.

Brighton appointed 31-year-old Fabian Hürzeler as their head coach earlier in June. The German led St Pauli to promotion to the Bundesliga last season.
