Arsenal’s captain Martin Odegaard celebrated a “massive win” over Wolves that moved his team back to the top of the Premier League.

The Norwegian secured a late winner in stoppage time, adding to Leandro Trossard’s opening goal to secure a 2-0 triumph at Molineux.

Just days after being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Bayern Munich, Arsenal bounced back with a hard-fought victory over Wolves.

Despite facing a resilient Wolves team that defended stoutly with a depleted squad, Arsenal struggled to find the breakthrough, registering a total of 24 shots during the match.

“Wolves are a good team, well organized,” Odegaard said. “A physical team who defend well and they made it hard for us but we just had to keep on playing and we knew that we were going to get the chances and the goals in the end.”

He added: “It’s always a bit tricky when you’re 1-0 up. We wanted to get the second one earlier but again it’s a good team and we have to give them credit as well but I don’t think it was our best performance. Today was all about the three points and we got them. Three points was the key, that was the main thing.”

With his eighth league goal of the season, Odegaard aims for the recent win to be a springboard for Arsenal towards Premier League success, having overtaken Manchester City in the standings. However, the reigning champions have the chance to reclaim the top spot by defeating Brighton next Thursday.

“I’ve been looking for the goal for a while now so it was good to get it again. We have to believe and go for it and then we will see.”
