Mohamed Salah Wins Footballer Of The Year, Equals Thierry Henry’s Record
Mohamed Salah has been named Footballer of the Year for the third time, thanks to his goals that played a key role in Liverpool claiming the Premier League title.
Meanwhile, Arsenal and England striker Alessia Russo won the award for the first time.
Salah becomes only the second player to earn three awards from the Football Writers’ Association, joining Arsenal legend Thierry Henry in achieving this feat.
He received 90 percent of the vote, the highest winning margin of the century, according to the FWA.
This season, the Egyptian forward scored 28 goals and provided 18 assists in the Premier League, featuring in every match as Liverpool secured their second title in five years under manager Arne Slot.
Last month, Salah extended his contract with Liverpool and is set to secure a fourth Premier League Golden Boot. He is just one goal or assists away from tying the record for the most goal involvements in a single Premier League season.
Salah has 46, one shy of the record held by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole over a 42-game season. His Liverpool team-mate Virgil van Dijk was second with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak third and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice fourth.
Salah received his first Footballer of the Year award during his debut season at Liverpool in 2017-18 and claimed it again in 2021-22.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson took home the prize in 2019-20, the season the Reds ended a 30-year league title drought.
Over the years, Thierry Henry won the award three times within four years from 2002-03 to 2005-06. In the past 30 years, Cristiano Ronaldo is the only other Premier League player to have won the award multiple times.
Salah is also the favorite to win the Premier League Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Year awards.
Russo took the women’s award from Manchester City striker Khadija Shaw after scoring 22 goals across the Women’s Super League and Women’s Champions League this season.
The forward played a key role in helping Arsenal reach the Women’s Champions League final, where they will face Barcelona in Lisbon on May 24.
Shaw finished second in the voting, with Russo’s Arsenal teammate Mariona Caldentey in third place and Chelsea captain Millie Bright in fourth.
