AS Roma have confirmed the signing of Artem Dovbyk from Girona, last season’s Pichichi winner. MD says the final fee is around €40m.

Dovbyk joined from Dnipro-1 for €7. million last summer and quickly made an impact by scoring 24 goals and providing 10 assists, helping his team achieve a commendable third-place finish.

The transfer deal is reported to be approximately €34 million, with an additional €4-5 million in performance-related, of which Dnipro-1 will receive 20%.

“AS Roma are delighted to welcome Artem Dovbyk into the Giallorossi family!” reads the statement on Roma’s official website.

The club reached a deal with La Liga side Girona for the permanent transfer of the Ukrainian center-forward, who turned 27 in June, to the Giallorossi ranks.

Artem, a left-footed and highly intelligent player, finished as La Liga’s top goal scorer in the 2023/24 season, netting 24 goals in 36 appearances and providing eight assists.

His remarkable performance played a significant role in securing the Catalan club’s historic first Champions League qualification, as they ended the previous season in third place in Spain’s top division.

Dovbyk represented Ukraine in both Euro 2020 and Euro 2024. He made a significant impact on 29 June 2021, scoring the decisive goal in the round of 16 against Sweden, which propelled his country into the quarter-finals of Europe’s international tournament.

This goal scored in extra time at 120 minutes and 37 seconds, is the second goal in Euro history, surpassed only by Semih Senturk’s strike in 2008 at 121 minutes and one second.

Artem will wear the number 11 shirt and make history as the first Ukrainian to play for AS Roma. The Friedkin family’s investment has brought one of the top goal scorers on the international scene to the club, marking the first time AS Roma has acquired the leading scorer from any European league from the previous season.

This has never happened before at the club, not even with the transfers of big names such as Abel Balbo, Gabriel Batistuta, Edin Dzeko, Vincenzo Montella, Roberto Pruzzo, Rudi Voeller, or Mirko Vucinic.

Roma have also agreed to a 10% sell-on fee clause for the Catalans, who lose their chief goal threat. Dovbyk signed a deal worth €3.5m per year and has committed to the Roman entity for the next five years.

In theory, Girona has already found a replacement by signing Abel Ruiz from Braga early in the transfer window. He will be competing for minutes alongside Cristhian Stuani, but it’s yet to be determined whether they will seek another forward before embarking on their debut Champions League campaign.
