Postecoglou Fires Critics: “The Story Always Ends The Same With Me And A Trophy”
Nottingham Forest manager, Ange Postecoglou, spoke to the media ahead of the weekend clash with Chelsea.
A major storyline this weekend is that Postecoglou has yet to secure a victory since taking charge, with Forest reportedly in a troubling slide. Speculation is already mounting about potential successors as his future with the club hangs in the balance.
He first spoke on if talks were had over his future and admits he doesn’t fit as a “failed manager”
”No talks, we just get on with it. I was told by Spurs that we have to win a trophy, and they are trying something different.
”This is a different story to tell, and maybe I am not a failed manager but one who, if you give time, the story always ends the same, with me and a trophy.
”I just don’t fit. Not here but just in general. If you look at it through the prism that I’m a failed manager who is lucky to get this job, I know you are smirking at me, but that has been said, and I can find the print (that says it), then of course these five weeks look like I’m under pressure.”
Tottenham’s sacking was offensive
He continued his rant about Tottenham and said he was offended when they let him go as he sees himself as a winner.
”Spurs said they tried to bring winners in and needed something different. I was offended by that, as I see myself as a winner.
”They finished eighth and no European football. We finished fifth in my first year. Every time Harry Kane scores a goal, I just wish he’d stayed one more year. He’d have been handy to have.
”For some reason, that year has disappeared from the record books. All I hear is that we finished 17th in my second year.”
First 10 games crucial
Postecoglou then stressed the importance of the opening 10 games for a manager, as he continued his criticism of Tottenham, suggesting they should have valued his trophy win more.
”My first year at Tottenham was used as a reason for losing my job as even Tottenham decided that the first 10 games were an anomaly. But the first 10 games here are very important apparently.
”I got them back into European football and was told in a meeting that winning a trophy means everything for this football club. We won the trophy.
”I will do what I think is the right thing to do to bring success to this club.”
Finally, the Forest boss commented on the importance of Saturday’s clash against Chelsea in what feels like a must-win game.
”It is always important to win the next game, we are facing a very good opponent.
”We’ve had a good few weeks training and everyone has come back (from the international break) in good condition.”
