Premier League Roundup: Haaland’s Scoring Run Continues As Arsenal Lead Manchester City At Christmas
Another weekend of Premier League action delivered goals, drama, but one familiar theme remained unchanged: Erling Haaland keeps scoring, and Manchester City keeps winning.
Arsenal Hold Festive Top Spot Again
Arsenal will wake up on December 25 sitting top of the Premier League, thanks to a narrow but vital 1-0 win away at Everton.
Viktor Gyökeres’ first-half penalty proved decisive as Mikel Arteta’s side collected three precious points in a tough away fixture.
It marks the fifth time Arsenal have been top at Christmas since the Premier League began in 1992. History, however, offers little comfort to Gunners fans, who failed to win the title on all four previous occasions.
This season, Arsenal are not just battling history but also the familiar presence of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City breathing down their necks.
City sits just two points behind in second place.
Haaland Unstoppable as City Cruise Past West Ham
Manchester City showed no signs of easing off, brushing aside West Ham 3-0 for their fifth straight league win. As has become routine, Erling Haaland was the difference.
The Norwegian struck once in each half to take his league tally to 19 goals in just 17 matches, continuing a scoring rate of better than a goal per game.
He also provided the assist for Tijjani Reijnders, whose powerful strike capped a dominant City display.
Haaland now has 104 Premier League goals, overtaking Cristiano Ronaldo remarkably, having played 122 fewer matches.
Across club and country this season, Haaland has 38 goals in 28 games, putting him on course for the most prolific campaign of his career as he heads toward his first World Cup, fitness permitting.
Yet Guardiola was far from satisfied, “I said to the players, ‘Merry Christmas, everyone, but it will not be enough if we don’t improve,’” the City boss revealed afterward.
A warning, perhaps, to both his players and the rest of the league.
Liverpool wins but loses Isak
Liverpool climbed to fifth place with a dramatic 2-1 win at Tottenham, but the victory came at a cost. Club-record signing Alexander Isak was forced off injured after scoring just minutes into his appearance.
The Swedish striker, who has endured a frustrating start to life at Anfield following a disrupted preseason and a recent groin injury, scored within 11 minutes of coming on.
However, his left ankle was damaged during a challenge from Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven, and he had to be helped from the pitch.
Tottenham’s problems worsened when Xavi Simons was sent off for a studs-up challenge on Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool capitalised as Hugo Ekitike doubled their lead with a header.
Late drama followed. Richarlison pulled one back for Spurs, before Cristian Romero became the second home player dismissed for kicking out at Ibrahima Konaté.
Chelsea Fight Back at Newcastle
Chelsea showed resilience to rescue a 2-2 draw at Newcastle, despite falling two goals behind inside the opening 20 minutes. For Newcastle’s Nick Woltemade, it was a week of stark contrasts.
Just days after scoring an own goal in a derby defeat to Sunderland, Woltemade struck twice early on to stun Chelsea. The visitors responded after the break, with Reece James curling a free kick in off the post, before João Pedro equalised assisted by goalkeeper Robert Sánchez.
Chelsea remain fourth, but have won just one of their last five league matches, while Newcastle continue to drift in mid-table despite Champions League involvement this season.
Wolves Sink Further Into Trouble
At the foot of the table, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ misery deepened with a 2-0 home loss to Brentford.
Wolves remain winless after 17 matches, tied with Sheffield United’s unwanted Premier League record from 2020-21.
It was their 10th consecutive league defeat, a club-record run, with Keane Lewis-Potter scoring both goals for Brentford. Wolves sit last on just two points, staring at a growing relegation crisis.
Semenyo Shows His Value
With transfer rumours swirling, Antoine Semenyo shows why he is attracting interest from Manchester City and Manchester United.
The Bournemouth winger curled home a superb goal in a 1-1 draw with Burnley, ending the Clarets’ seven-game losing streak.
Burnley snatched a late point through Armando Broja’s 90th-minute equaliser, but Semenyo’s performance once again showed his growing influence in the Premier League.
Promoted Sides Impress
Among the newly promoted teams, Sunderland and Leeds continue to defy expectations. zone
Sunderland’s 0-0 draw at Brighton keeps them sixth, while Leeds produced one of the weekend’s standout results with a 4-1 win over Crystal Palace, moving six points clear of the relegation zone.
